Martin and Johnson take 10th Annual Galway-Cavendish Forest Rally Catchacoma, Aug. 13, 2011 - It was a record-setting final stage that helped lead the team of driver Chris Martin of Toronto and co-driver Brian Johnson of Bethel, Connecticut to victory in the 10th running of the Galway-Cavendish Forest Rally organized by the Peterborough Motor Sports Club. Martin and Johnson, in a Subaru Impreza E85, are the first team ever to break the 5:00 mark on the 8.32 kilometre Parnel Quarry stage road off County Road 507. Martin’s total stage time of 30:30.5 was 45 seconds ahead of the team of Ryan Huber of Mississauga and John Vanos of Markham who climbed from 11th place to second after two stages in their Subaru Impreza STi. Huber/Vanos ended the day 26 seconds ahead of third place crew Nick Mathew of Mississauga and Kelly Mathew of Caledon in a Subaru WRX. Eighteen cars started the closed stage performance rally with 17 finishing the 73.73 kilometre event. The only casualty was an off- road excursion by Warren Hayward of Chelsea, Quebec and Amanda Tolhurst of Mississauga only 800 metres into the first stage. Neither team member was injured but the car suffered extensive damage. While no PMSC members competed, 16 club members helped organize and operate the Ontario Performance Rally Championship event. They were among the more than 70 volunteers, including 25 Amateur Radio operators, who helped run the rally. |
